Are you bilingual or multilingual?

  • Practice & improve your languages
  • Explore interpreting, translation, and other types of language jobs
  • Support your communities & break down language barriers
  • Meet new people and learn from each other and from all of your languages

What is interpreting? Where can you find interpreters?

Interpreting is when two or more people do not share a common language and someone, called an interpreter, transfers what people share from one language into another.

You may have observed interpreters at the hospital or on TV when a president gives a speech.

Maybe you’ve interpreted for your family and loved ones in many settings.

Interpreters work everywhere. In addition to hospitals, they are in court rooms, at the United Nations, in government offices (like the school department), and at community events. The Boston School Committee has interpreters in eight different languages!

They are there so people who don’t share a common language can communicate and understand each other.

Interpreters work in person and virtually, like on Zoom.

What students say about Interpreting Club

“In the interpreting club, there was a great community and always good vibes. I learned so much about the interpreting world that I had no idea existed. It was 10 times more interesting than I could’ve imagined to really understand just how detailed the work of an interpreter is in day-to-day work. Overall I would definitely recommend the Interpreting Club, if you’re looking for a club that gives you a good time, but you also get to learn about a pretty cool and interesting job prospect.”

– Danyelle, OB Class of 2022
